Brisbane Ferry Terminals Competition

In May 2011, the Queensland Government invited designers to submit expressions of interest for the rebuilding of several key Brisbane ferry terminals damaged during the 2011 floods. Collaborating with Shane Thompson Architects, we were selected as one of the three shortlisted designers for this competition.

The submitted design incorporated organic grid shell structures which drew inspiration from the river lily and the patterns created by water flow. Flood mitigation measures included pontoons which could be raised above flood water levels with a simple screw pile mechanism and decorative protective ‘art nets’ located upstream from the land based structures.

The resulting compositions produced an evocative and compelling aesthetic which was highly commended by the review panel.
