The Russell Street entry to the north of South Bank suffers from a history of adjustments that have left a contested and fragmented environment at the expense of a strong arrival experience. The aim of this commission was to look at a small scale, short term intervention that would improve the sense of arrival and support the journey towards a permanent solution in the coming years.

The main component of work delivered a public realm concept that addresses:

  • Pedestrian safety and prioritization;
  • Management of service and emergency vehicle access to South Bank;
  • Removal of private vehicles from QPAC ‘shared’ road; and
  • De-fragmentation of the existing space to support greater arrival impact and an enjoyable visitor experience.
