Building Robust Oyster Baskets to help clean Moreton Bay

Last week, as an initiative under our Climate Change and Sustainability Action Plan (SCAP), the Brisbane LatStudios’ team built 167 Robust Oyster Baskets (ROBs) at OzFish Oysterworld, located at the Port of Brisbane. The ROBs will be deployed as part of the Moreton Bay Shellfish Reef Restoration project - the largest community-driven shellfish restoration project in Australia (OzFish, 2025). Used shells are collected from local businesses and restaurants, sterilised and then placed into ROBs, which help to restore the reefs by encouraging live oysters to colonise. The ROBs our team constructed will:

  • Filter approximately 20,000 litres of water per hour in Moreton Bay.
  • Create new homes for approximately 417,000 shellfish.
  • Support approximately 116,000 other animals, such as crabs, prawns, snails, worms and more.
  • Promote an increase in fish biomass, contributing to approximately 1 ton of harvestable fish.

Thank you to the OzFish team for a fun and educational day teaching us more about the Moreton Bay Shellfish Reef Restoration project! You can find out more information about the project at the website link below.
