Working with SMEC, LatStudios prepared a preliminary Landscape and Visual Assessment (LVA) for Powerlink Queensland for the potential 2,000 MW pumped hydro energy scheme at Borumba Dam. This site is located 48 km south west of Gympie in Imbil, and is located within the Gympie and Somerset Regional Council local government areas.

The project was transferred to Queensland Hydro in 2022, and the LVA contributed to Queensland Hydro’s detailed analytical report (DAR) submitted to the Queensland Government.

The assessment provided a baseline assessment of project in relation to the site, landscape context, character, features, visual amenity and potential impacts relating to residents and recreational visitors of Borumba Dam and the surrounding area.

The LVA also investigated the potential  risks to landscape and visual values within the study area relating to the reference design for the Project. The LVA did not identify any critical risks to these values that would preclude the progression of the Project, however, did identify some matters requiring further investigation in a full LVIA.

The DAR was submitted to the Queensland Government in March 2023. In June 2023, the government committed $6 billion to fund the project and it formally moved into the planning and approvals process.
