Project Details
Working as part of a team lead by 'The Long View Group' for the State Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing , LatStudios' role included master planning and conceptual built form design services.

Informed by stakeholder workshops and public consultation meetings, the goal was to create a world class nature based Gateway Visitor Centre that will deliver increased visitor amenity, ecotourism experiences and educational programs along with new turtle research and conservation facilities.

The Master Plan builds on and enhances existing facilities to create a holistic ecotourism experience. Opportunities to attract and expand partnerships with the ecotourism industries, the local community, research institutions and local businesses were explored to establish a sustainable and robust business plan guiding future expansion.

New facilities will support key business strategies for the Centre to achieve broader visitation appeal throughout the year and not be limited to the turtle laying and hatching season. Protection of the site's environmental qualities and the hatching areas on the beach is critical to the success of any future development so site planning and building design ensures a minimal footprint and zero light spill.

The first stage of the Master Plan to be implemented includes the construction of a new tensile roof canopy over the existing amphitheatre which will provide much needed amenity for visitors to relax and enjoy the ranger-led presentations.
